Religion is the one which binds us all; it is the one which tear us apart, it is the one which creates us all, it is the one which destroys us all. We look towards our religion to solve our problems, but more often than not, it is the one which leads to the problem. Religion-essentially a simple concept, implying the different practices and customs we follow, is blown out of proportion and many-a-time influences our personal views towards a particular subject.
Religion instead of being treated as a private matter of different households and people is now being treated as a means to garner money, votes and what not.
The days of each week, which are individually taken as the days of a particular god or goddess in Hindu mythology and other religions are now used by various organisation as well as destitute people to garner money for their own selves. Such is the despicable nature of our country’s people that they have resorted to taking of money by giving the intolerable excuse of religion. On the other hand, our country’s politicians have been using the concept of religion for garnering votes for the purpose of being elected. They do not realise that by being of the same religion, or by sharing hatred for other religions, they cannot always interpret the feelings of the people. India is a democratic country and people should be allowed to vote for other parties and candidates irrespective of their religions. If this practice of shunning people form other religions due to their inability to support the political candidate results in in-fighting and innumerable losses for the common man. The politicians remain high above this scrounging for votes by merely giving speeches and false promises to the people, in other words, watching from the sidelines as people-neighbours, friends mortally wound and even kill each other for obtaining votes for the candidate of their religion rather than their choice. Religion gives these people license to kill their fellow men, politicians a reason to instigate the members of one community against another. With a country headed by a Sikh Prime minister, a female Hindu president, a Muslim vice-president, a Christian head of the ruling party, a Dalit head of the Legal system, why do we need to resort to the low practice of obtaining votes on the basis of religion?
We may preach peace and harmony on one hand, while on the other hand, we instigate our community to rebel against those not belonging to their religion. Religion, as I have repeatedly stated is meant to be kept as a private matter and not to be ushered into the public domain for purposes not relevant for the development our country. Raising religion as a point of contention can only lead to in-fighting among our people and the day will be nigh when people belonging to different religions will have to leave our country due to the demands of the majority population which presently consists of Hindu’s. This is ironic indeed considering that our country is led by people with the country’s interests at heart, but not the followers of our so-proclaimed majority religion-Hinduism.
