It’s not always about protesting against your parents, rebelling against the educational system or defying the notion of the society as a whole; sometimes it’s just about having your say in a group of people. It may seem to be a complex subject criss-crossed by various perspectives and opinions, but it is merely about doing what you want to do and your way of doing it. It does not comprise of a vast range of opinions, what other people think, but what you as an individual feel about the subject as a whole.
There are different ways of expressing your views-Some resort to violence on the streets, some believe in the concept of candle light vigils, some resort to the internet for support for their cause, while others do it their way. They don’t take to the streets, nor do they start any online petitions, they just write for it, not to garner support but to remove the misconceptions about it. For me, freedom of expression is the ability to write about it and not be faced with licentious comments, to have a creative license which nobody can interfere with. It’s the ability to speak about it without fearing a backlash from the so-called self-assembled majority. The majority is but a myth established to make us forget our notions of righteousness, to make us follow the horde, be a part of those people who agree on a particular view-point for the sake of it. It’s the ability to think different, yet not pay a price for your individuality, to not have to explain myself to a 100 other people for the choices I make.
You may wear a black armband, ragged jeans or dress in an extreme manner for the purpose of your revolt. But whatever you protest against, you must have a cause, a rebel without a cause is all that you pretend to be. Rebelling against your family, the education system is a joke if you can’t back it up with a reason. Rebellion for the sake of rebellion is a farcical excuse to get away from the pitiful excuse that is your life. The real rebel is the one who actually does something for it, rises to the occasion when required, sticks to his point of view even if his life depends on it. As they say, don’t do the crime if you can’t do the time; So back your views up even if they are inconsequential in the greater picture of life. He does not shy away from the decisions to be made, from the sacrifices to be made, because he knows within himself that if he does not follow his heart, he will just be a part of the 1600 million strong hypocritical hordes that is our still-developing nation.
To sum it up, freedom of expression may be by anybody, in any form, but you should have the courage to stick to your beliefs come what may and express yourself even if your back is against the wall and you face the ire of your loved one’s because you are only as good as your views.
