You want to know what’s Disgusting-The face book phobia that people have. They are always online not due to any work or for the purpose of checking their mail, but for checking their face book account to see if they got any ‘gifts’ , ‘hugs’, etc. Do not get me wrong, I am also part of the face book addicted generation, am part of the group of people who consider themselves elite for having a face book account. It may seem that I am being hypocritical, but I am gradually trying to wean myself off from this face book phobia.
Day in day out, people-friends, acquaintances (whose name you can barely remember), heck, even teachers are incessantly pestering you with friend requests. And when the sad, stupid soul accepts out of embarrassment, he is constantly treated with a barrage of requests for various applications, which in the eyes of many are considered Face book spam. This is in no way a harangue against the face book generation which is expanding to include a wide age group from the age of 5 to God knows what age. This is merely meant as a wake up call. To those people, who are pretending that they joined face book to keep in touch, I ask them, who are you fooling? Everybody wants to be part of the ‘in’ crowd, nobody wants to be left out. Nowadays, thinking aloud against the authorities is passé, but joining face book and posting it as an event is definitely in vogue.
What happened to those days, where people waited endlessly for letters from loved one’s however short they may have been. What has happened to those days, where people waited for the telephone to ring, sitting in front of it, willing it to ring, just to hear the voice of a loved one. Forgive me for being nostalgic, but has technology surpassed such borders, that for friends, let alone siblings to talk, they have to write one each other’s face book wall, or worse yet, send a message to their face book account. Has modern day technology crippled us so, has the furthering of communication technologies led to a furthering of personal relations with our loved ones. Face book has revolutionised relationships so, before, a proclamation of love was considered private and cherished by love-lorn boys and girls. But now, the relationship has to be declared across face book for it to be given a stamp of authenticity, it has become more of a matter of social prestige rather than a personal matter. It is truly a sad day for our society when children need to contact their parents through face book and inform them of their respective decisions. Many senior citizens lament, that, has it become too tiresome for their children to pick up their phone and call them, leave alone writing them a letter. In many ways, technology has revolutionised our life, especially communication, but not always for the better as is seen by this growing menace referred to as face book.
I would like to conclude by stating that this is not a diatribe against face book and other social networking sites, but merely to serve as a warning to those, yet unaware of this malaise which is strangling our modern, yet culturally rich society by the roots.
So, beware of this face book phobia and do not get attached to it, cause when it ends, you will find wanting in ways to pass your otherwise mundane day. Always remember-
What comes will have to pass.
